Coon on a Log

This two-page spread was featured in a 1948 issue of Life Magazine. It features the unusual “Coon On A Log” competition that took place eachyear at the lake in Cave Springs, Arkansas. Raccoon hunters from all over the region would travel to Cave Springs with their hunting dogs in order to participate, and hundreds of spectators would flock to the laketo watch. Here’s how the competition worked: A raccoon would be placed on a log in the middle of the lake, and the hunting dogs would be released from the shore to swim to the raccoon. Whichever dog first caught the raccoon won the contest. Animal rights activists eventually protested against the event and shut it down
